The Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT), the Egyptian Equestrian Federation (EEF), and other partners have announced a five-year program for working horses in the Giza Pyramids area. This was reported by the British equestrian magazine Horse & Hound. The program aims to improve access to food, water, and veterinary care. According to the report, the Egyptian government and the animal welfare organization Brooke are also involved.
Support for Approximately 700 Horses Initially
According to Horse & Hound, the program is set to reach approximately 700 horses initially. In a second phase, support is planned to expand to around 2,000 animals. The initiative includes training for owners and caregivers, as well as ongoing welfare monitoring. The working conditions for the horses are also expected to improve.
According to the magazine, Jenny Ellis, named as the European representative of the International Grooms Association, will provide independent oversight. She has experience in animal welfare work in Cairo and will ensure that improvements are practical and measurable.
Feed and Equipment Already Distributed
The initiative follows the LGCT event in Cairo. Unused feed from LGCT partner Red Mills and surplus hay from the event were distributed to working horses via the EEF. LGCT grooms also offered unused equipment and veterinary supplies.
According to the report, the EEF and LGCT have pledged financial contributions. A dedicated donation channel is planned. Details regarding funding, organization, and implementation will follow as soon as they are finalized.
