In late September 2026, Irish Sport Horse Carawich was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the United States Eventing Association (USEA). The gelding was the long-time partner of US rider Jim Wofford, who himself had received this honor back in 2003.
The pair won team bronze at the 1978 World Championships and finished tenth individually. A year later came a fourth place at the Badminton Horse Trials. In 1980, Carawich and Wofford claimed the individual silver medal at the Alternative Olympics in Fontainebleau – a replacement event for the Moscow Games, which the USA boycotted. Before the cross-country, Wofford was worried because Carawich had not taken hold of the bit on the roads, but the gelding saved his strength and shone in the decisive course. In 1981, they capped their time together with a win at the Kentucky Three-Day Event; shortly afterward, Carawich sustained an injury and was retired from the sport.
“Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor in American eventing,” said a USEA spokesperson. Carawich was celebrated for his intelligence and athleticism in cross-country, seemed to anticipate questions on the course, and developed a special partnership with his rider.
Jim Wofford recalled in an earlier interview his first encounter with the bay gelding at the horse inspection at Badminton in 1977: “The horse stopped, turned his head, and looked straight at me.” In December of that same year, he bought the still-untried Carawich. Just a year later, the pair was on the team for the World Championships – the beginning of a career that has now been crowned with the highest US honor for eventing horses.
